Is there car rental in Flåm?
Have you ever wondered about car rental options in Flåm? I frequently receive this question and have decided to address it in this blog post.
Luckily, there is a small car rental agency in Flåm at the moment. In addition, there are plenty of alternative transportation options to explore this stunning destination.
Stay tuned to discover the best ways to get around and make the most of your visit to Flåm!
Is there car rental in Flåm, Aurland or any surrounding villages?
The short answer is that yes, there is.
The long answer is that there is only one car rental agency in the fjord villages I’ve covered on this blog (Flåm, Aurland, Undredal, Gudvangen). This means that there is a very limited number of cars. At the moment, they have 4 cars available for rent in Flåm.
The nearest car rental agencies in addition to the one in Flåm can be found in the towns Voss (1 hour from Flåm) and Sogndal (1,5 hour from Flåm).
Flåm Bilutleie (Flåm Car Rental) is the name of the car rental in Flåm.
How can you get around the villages without a car?
Each of the villages are fully walkable. By this I mean that once you are in Flåm or Aurland, for example, you do not need a car and can walk to any of the attractions there.
However, traveling between the villages is not as straight forward. Below is a brief breakdown of the public transportation between them all.
Please note that the public transport is more frequent in the high season (summer months), and less frequent in the winter.
- By ferry: the fjord cruises running in the area stop in all four of the villages: Flåm, Aurland, Undredal and Gudvangen.
- By regional bus: there are regional buses traveling along the main road (E16), stopping in Flåm, Aurland and Gudvangen. It stops along the main road as it passes Undredal, and the walk to the village is about 1-1,5 hours.
- By shuttle bus: in the summer months, there are shuttle buses running between Flåm and Gudvangen.
- Taxi: there are taxis servicing all four villages. In the summer months, it is recommended to book in advance as they only have a handful of cars.
I have covered how to travel between Flåm and the other villages in more detail here!

Hello there,
Thank you for your guide and suggestions.
There now is in fact a car rental agency in Flam; we have a car reserved for our trip in September.
You may wish to re write your notes regarding availability of cars in Flam.

That’s great to hear! There used to be one, but their website was down for a long time – I’ve been monitoring it to stay up to date for when it was back up and running, and I appreciate you letting me know. Thank you! 🙂

Hey Keith,
I’ve been trying to find a car rental place in Flam as well. What is the name of the place you booked with?
Thanks,
Chris
Lisa
It’s https://www.flamcarrental.com/en/home/ 🙂
I have also updated the guide to reflect that the car rental is now in operation!

How do you reserve a taxi? I have seen Flomax and Autland taxi mentioned but the phone number don’t work and I don’t see a way to reserve online.
Or how to see ferry schedule? Do you need to reserve ahead?
Lisa
Try +47 57633400 for the taxi 🙂
The ferry schedule can be found on http://www.norwaysbest.com, where you can also book the tickets 🙂

Hi, thank you for the article! You recommend booking a taxi in advance if one is needed in the summer months; do you have any guidance for how to do that? I’m not finding a lot online about taxi companies available in Flam and we have a larger party (7 people).
Lisa
Of course! The number for the local taxi is +47 57633400. This is the only taxi company in the villages – so I completely understand that it’s tricky to find online 🙂

Thank you so much!
