Hotels in Flam, Norway
As one of Norway’s leading tourist destinations, you are right to assume that there are some great hotels in Flam. The village/town is located in Vestland County at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord.
Every year, thousands of tourists visit Flam, mostly to ride the famous Flåm Railway and cruise the UNESCO recognised Nærøyfjord. Most of these tourists spend a night or two in Flåm. Some, even more!
I grew up in Aurland, the immediate neighbourhood of Flåm, and a 10-minute drive from the charming town. Hence, I know the area in and out and have decent knowledge about the places to visit and accommodations to stay at in Flam.
In this article, you will find a ready-to-use compilation of hotels in Flam, Norway.

Where to stay when visiting Flam?
Flam is a pretty small town and thus has very few accommodation options. Since it is also a popular tourist destination, a handful of these tend to book out early. I highly suggest you make your hotel bookings well in advance, ideally as soon as you know you are heading to Flåm for your trip.
If your trip to Flam is a last-minute plan, or if you see yourself travelling in the peak season (summer months), worry not! I have also included hotels of the nearby villages like Aurland (10-minute drive) and Gudvangen (20-minute drive), in case you aren’t able to grab a booking in Flam.
All the hotels I’ve included in this list have good ratings and are highly recommended for a comfortable stay by me as well as the past guests who have stayed in these. If you’re looking for a budgeted trip to Flam and can’t stay in one of the more luxurious properties, I’ve also included cheaper accommodations like hostels and guest houses.
These won’t burn a hole in your pocket, neither will they leave you with miserable memories of a decision gone wrong. I’ve also put in some apartment recommendations ideal for a group of friends, large families, or family travelling with kids who want to do some basic cooking and require a kitchenette for their convenience.
As mentioned above, Flam is a really tiny village, and I’ve tried including all of the hotels there are in this list. Hence, this post will, in fact, include all the Flam hotels. You can thus treat this as a comprehensive accommodation guide to Flam. Whatever your booking criteria is – budget, locality, or comfort, you’ll find what you are looking for here!
To make things easier for you, I’ve provided links to where you can book these hotels in Flam, Norway.

Hotels in Flam, Norway
Fretheim Hotel
Fretheim Hotel is located just 2-minute walk away from the Flam railway station. The hotel is a refurbished farm manor house built in the 1800s, and despite the renovations, it still holds the centuries-old quaint historic charm. Fretheim Hotel boasts 120 individually decorated rooms, out of which 17 are situated in the hotel’s old wing. Those are the historic rooms of the hotel.
The rooms at Fretheim hotel provide beautiful views of either the fjord and/or the surrounding mountains. The rooms have antique furniture and are equipped with all modern luxury. They also have two great restaurants (Arven and Utsyn) and a lobby bar where you can get the best cocktails in the village.
To be fair, it’s the only place in Flåm you can get real cocktails, but it still counts.
Flåmsbrygga Hotel
Flamsbrygga Hotel is located right next to the Flam harbour from where the fjord cruise begins its sail. All the rooms at this hotel come with a balcony opening up to the amazing fjord. Yes, all the rooms! Imagine opening your balcony door in the morning and getting the most incredible fjord view!
The rooms have a distinctive style and are both traditional and rustic, yet have all modern amenities.
Adjacent to the Flamsbrygga Hotel is the Flåmstova restaurant, Furukroa café, and Ægir brewpub. There are so many amazing beers that are brewed at Ægir, it’s difficult to keep track. It is known as one of the best craft breweries in Norway, and many of its beers are sold in stores countrywide.
My personal favourites include Aud, Bøyla, and Vetlebror (meaning “little brother” in Norwegian).
Tiny House with a view (plus a rowing boat)
This unique accommodation is located in the midst of an apple orchard with some incredible fjord views. It is situated within walking distance from the Flam Railway Station and is perfect for guests looking for privacy and who do not want to stay in a hotel.
The space-efficient cottage comes with a double bed in the attic and a double sofa-cum-bed.
The best part about renting out the tiny cottage is that a rowing boat and two bicycles are included in the rental that you can make use of any time you want. The location and views are perfect for a long-term vacationer or a honeymooner.
Flam Ferdaminne
Flam Ferdaminne apartments are located beside the Flam Railway Station, making up for a great location to stay if you arrive by the Flamsbana (the Flam Railway). The property features 4 apartments in total located on the top floor of the popular Flåm Bakeri.
Each apartment features 2 spacious bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, and a living room.
Each apartment at Flam Ferdaminne can sleep up to 4 to 8 people and hence is perfect for a family or a group of friends. The rooms’ balconies open to the view of fjords and surrounding mountains. They also have a common terrace where you can soak up some Norwegian sunshine.
Do not forget to sample the ‘skolebolle’ (a traditional Norwegian bun with vanilla custard cream and cocoa nut shavings) from the bakery below during your stay here.
Flam Marina and Apartments
Flåm Marina and Apartments is located next to the marina in the charming town of Flam. It is situated a 6-minute walk along the shoreline from the Flam railway station and the village center. Every apartment at Flam Marina has its own private balcony offering an unobstructed view of the fjord – which makes for a perfect view with your morning coffee.
They also have a kitchen and a living room, again making this stay ideal for families and those travelling with a group of friends.
The menu at Flam Marina is quite unique and creative. Their restaurant offers a collection of great milkshakes, coffee, and hot chocolate, which are highly recommended.
Norwegian and Scandinavian cuisine lovers will love all that the restaurant offers, and those craving Italian will appreciate their great pizza. Plus, the restaurant arguably has the best views of the fjord in town.
Heimly Pensjonat
Just a little further past Flam Marina is an inn that, yet again, gives exquisite views of the fjord. Heimly Pensjonat is a terrific place to stay in Flam for people who don’t want to stay in hostels and still want to save some money. The rooms at this inn are simply furnished with some basic amenities, and are spotlessly clean and include everything a guest requires.
You can meet and greet fellow travellers at Heimly Pensjonat as it has a common social room and fantastic garden seating outside. There are nice common spaces indoors and outdoors, all surrounded by majestic scenery and peace. Note that Heimly is only open in the summer months.
Brekke Gard Apartments and Hostel
Brekke Gard Apartments and Hostel is about a 15-minute walk away from The Flam Railway Station. Though it’s a little further from the fjord, it provides lovely views of the Flåm River, and is close to the above-mentioned Brekkefossen hike.
All of their apartments are decorated with wooden flooring and come with a well-equipped kitchen, private bathrooms, and a private patio overlooking the river.
Brekke Gard Hostel is run by the same people as the apartments and is ideal for those looking for a budgeted yet comfortable stay. Opting to stay in the hostel is a great way to meet like-minded people and travellers, so if you are backpacking or travelling solo, you might make some new friends here!
Steinshølen Holiday Home
Located in the Vestland region of Flam, Steinshølen Holiday Home is a good 20-minute walk away from the Flam Railway Station. This 4-bedded holiday home offers rooms with garden and river views. The vacation home features a fully equipped kitchen, modern amenities like a washing machine and dishwasher, a seating area, and a large patio.
Since Steinshølen Holiday Home is located near the Flam Railway Line, you might get lucky and spot the famous Flamsbana from your window. The house has a really nice garden with cherry trees and is ideal for those looking for a quiet vacation with great hospitality.
Flam Hostel and Camping
Flam Hostel and Camping ground are located in the centre of Flam, not even a 5-minute walk away from the Flam Railway Station. The hostel rooms have either private or shared bathroom facilities, depending on the type of room you choose. They also have one-bedded and two-bedded cabin rooms along with a small kitchenette.
Flam Camping ground offers a wide range of pitches for caravans and campers. The pitch areas are grassy, shaded, and have an amazing view. The tent spots are sheltered ones with a big common toilet. Both kitchen and washing machine are available for use by all the guests. They also have electric vehicle charging points.
Tiny house with a terrace
Another tiny house in Flåm! These have become quite popular lately, and make for a truly unique place to stay. This tiny house is located a little further up the valley from Flåm Railway Station, not too far from the Brekkefossen Waterfall (one of my favourite hikes in Flam).
This tiny house has two bedrooms, and large windows letting you look out into the greeneries surrounding it. There is a fully equipped kitchen, and so this tiny house is perfect for couples who want to cook for themselves during their trip to Flåm.
Hotels near Flam, Norway
As I have mentioned a couple of times in this guide, Flåm is a small village and has limited options for places to stay. In addition, they tend to book out easily, especially during peak season. Hence, I’ve included some good hotel properties near Flam that are a short drive (or bus ride) away from the village.
If you find that all hotels in Flam are completely booked, you can opt to stay in Aurland or Gudvangen (or even Undredal). Aurland is a beautiful village that is just a 10-minute drive from the Flam, whereas Gudvangen, the Viking village, can be reached via either a fjord cruise from Flam or a 20-minute drive from Flam.
Vangsgaarden Hotel
Vangsgaarden Hotel is located in Aurland, a 10 minutes’ drive from Flam. This historic hotel offers rooms with amazing views of the fjord, the mountains, or the blooming hotel gardens. The hotel is amongst the oldest buildings in Aurland and refurbished and converted into comfortable rooms in different price categories.
Vangsgaarden also offers 6 high-standard cabins with balconies with stunning views out onto the fjord. These cabins come with a living room, kitchen, and loft. Just a 20-minute drive away is the Stegastein viewpoint which is a must-visit when touring Aurland and Flåm.
Fun fact: I used to work as a receptionist at Vangsgaarden every summer when I was younger! I’ve covered the hotel in more detail here.
Hotel Aurlandsfjord
As the name suggests, Hotel Aurlandsfjord is a fjord hotel in Aurland. It is located in the centre of Aurland, close to the pub, cafe, church, and the grocery store. After a recent renovation, the hotel now features 30 vintage-styled rooms in different categories, and a great restaurant.
With fjord or mountain views, each room in Hotel Aurlandsfjord is worth staying in. You will find a work desk and a private bathroom in each room. I highly recommend dining in their in-house restaurant (even if you do not stay here), which serves amazing food. My favourite dish for the past two summers has been their barley risotto with cauliflower cream, which is just so creamy and yummy!
Gudvangen Fjordtell
From Flam, through Norway’s second longest tunnel, and a 20-minute drive away, you will find yourself in Gudvangen, home to Njardarheimr – the Viking village. Gudvangen Fjordtell is located right on the banks of the Nærøyfjord, the UNESCO World Heritage site. The hotel offers Viking-style rooms as well as apartments with a kitchen.
Gudvangen Fjordtell features 5 different restaurants offering the finest Norwegian cuisine. Staying here will keep you close to distinct Viking culture, where you can meet the real Vikings and have a peek into their worlds.
Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell
Want to cycle the Rallarvegen, try Norway’s longest zipline, ride the Flamsbana – the world’s most beautiful train journey, or hike Flåm Valley? Well, by staying in Vatnahalsen, you’ll be in the centre of all the action.
Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell is an activity-based hotel located in the upper part of the Flam Valley, at the head of the famous Flam Railway, a short walk from Myrdal station (and an even shorter walk from Vatnahalsen station).
The hotel is surrounded by a mountainous landscape and can be reached only by train. The rooms overlook the mountains or the Reinungavatnet Lake. I like this place because there is a range of activities that you can experience in the hotel’s surroundings, but staying there also feels like you are escaping the real world for a little bit.
Here is my complete review of Vatnahalsen Hotel!
There is no surprise that Flam is filled with globetrotters all year round. So, if you envision a great place to stay, make sure to book ahead of schedule. Flåm Accommodation Map
Below you will find a map of all the places to stay in Flåm, Norway! There are a couple more places on the map than in my list above, and the reason I have not listed them is because these are apartments rented out by people, not hotels or companies.
However, they all seem great, and there is no reason not to book a place to stay that isn’t listed in my guide above. Regardless, I am sure you will find a great place to stay by the fjords!
